What is Diabetes?

When you eat, especially carbohydrates, part of your food is broken down into glucose, which is another name for sugar. Glucose travels through your bloodstream to all of your body's cells, where it provides them with energy. This, in turn, gives you the energy you need to function. However, for glucose to be used by the cells, it must leave the bloodstream and enter the cells. In some cases, this process doesn't happen properly, causing blood sugar levels to rise in the blood. This is a key characteristic of diabetes.
